Red Drum Pottery

Now in a new location in the old Indiantown Gallery, this is the working studio of potters Wes Lassiter and Rhonda Bates. You can often catch the potters at the wheel, and you can see their functional and decorative pieces on display in the gallery. You must stop in to see their award-winning relief ceramic tiles and ornaments imprinted with sea life, floral patterns and wildlife. The Christmas tree ornaments are the perfect souvenirs of a Hatteras vacation. There’s a painting gallery here as well, representing Rhonda’s work. They’ve recently begun representing several regional artists as well.

The legendary Red Drum, serving Hatteras Island since 1954, offers all the bait, tackle, supplies, gear and advice you’ll need, plus rod building and repair. It’s in a strip center that also houses a grocery store, a gas station, an auto parts store and an auto repair shop. Stop by for a free tide table.

Ride Hatteras is a surf shop and watersports outfitter. The shop sells name-brand surf-inspired clothing and accessories for men and women along with all the recreational equipment you’ll need for surfing,bodyboarding, windsurfing, kiteboarding and paddleboarding. Ride Hatteras offers surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding lessons for beginner, intermediate or advanced riders. Equipment is tailored to meet the needs of the student and the wind conditions of the day. Kids’ lessons are available, and class sizes are small. You can rent equipment for standup paddleboarding, windsurfing, surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding and kayaking here as well.

Risky Business Seafood Market

Risky Business offers shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams, and they’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments as well. Risky Business also has a store on the waterfront in Hatteras Village.

Risky Business is the island’s only seafood market located on the water, so you can come and watch the boats unload their catch. Purchase shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams here. They’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments too. Risky Business also offers complete processing of your catch, from cleaning to vacuum packaging to freezing. They have another store in Avon.

Road’s End Gallery and Wine Shop is two stores in one. The gallery sells fine art and craft, offering a unique collection of jewelry, functional and decorative pottery, art glass, mixed media, paintings, prints and photography, bath and body items and much more. The gallery is proud to represent local and North Carolina artists and craftsmen. The wine shop portion of the store sells wine, specialty beers and gourmet foods, snacks, condiments and much more.

This classic, surf-only shop has been a Rodanthe fixture for more than 20 years. Rodanthe Surf Shop is a hardcore surf shop with no fluff or over-commercialized merchandise. This is the place to get your own Hatteras Glass custom surfboard. They do surfboard repairs, rentals and lessons for adults and children. Rodanthe Surf Shop stocks the major brands of surf wear for men and women, and people love their original logo T-shirts for all ages. The shop is in a tiki-hut style building next to the Liberty Gas station in Rodanthe.

The Blue Whale

The Blue Whale has been in business on Hatteras Island for 41 years. They sell just about all the convenience items you’ll need plus other fun stuff, including bait and tackle, groceries, hot sauces, gourmet coffee beans, imported and domestic beer, wine, beach supplies, ice, gas and diesel fuel, books and magazines. The Blue Whale also has a propane exchange, offers notary service and has an ATM.

The Elegant Attic

The Elegant Attic is an antiques shop housed in an old Buxton cottage that the owner saved from demolition. The shop’s main feature is a spectacular selection of antique stained-glass windows and doors imported from England. You’ll find other antiques as well, including English and domestic furniture. The prices are very reasonable. The shop, which is south of the Buxton post office, is huge, and you could easily spend a couple of hours browsing around in here. The owner also has vignettes set up in her house and welcomes folks into her home to see how she uses the windows as décor.

The Fishin’ Hole

In business since the 1970s, The Fishin’ Hole is a full-service tackle shop with live bait and tackle plus brand-name rods and reels. It is an official weigh station, and the staff repairs rods and reels. They also sell groceries, beer and wine, snacks and drinks, beach supplies, T-shirts, waders, hip boots and clothing.

The Glass Bead

Let your creative streak shine at this make-your-own-jewelry store. The Glass Bead has thousands of beads, including handmade beads, crystals, semiprecious stones, charms and seed beads, plus hemp for designing your own necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other jewelry. You can make the jewelry here, and lessons are offered. All the supplies you need are available, including cording, thread, clasps and idea books. Pre-made jewelry is for sale as well. Java Junction, a coffee shop and Internet café is right next door.

The Glass Bead bead shop has thousands of beads and all the jewelry-making supplies you’ll need to create your own jewelry. They also sell jewelry and photography by local artists. Beach Mugs serves coffee and all sorts of espresso-based drinks, tea, delicious baked goods and ice cream. Internet access is available on your computer or theirs.
