Big Wave Dave’s is an upscale convenience store selling what you’d expect: gas, drinks and snacks, beach stuff, T-shirts and specialty beers and wines. What you don’t expect is Big Wave Dave’s cool theater space where you can catch a movie or live music and enjoy a beer or glass of wine. It’s an intimate theater – only 32 seats – and they show independent, up-and-coming movies that you won’t see at the blockbuster theaters. Stop by or call to get the movie and live music schedule. In the off-season you might catch a televised sporting event in the theater. The theater is also available to rent.

In business for more than 25 years on the Outer Banks, Birthday Suits is a favorite for swimwear — in fact, it’s been voted Best on the Beach for swimsuits for eight years in local polls. For kids, there’s everything from swim diapers and toddler suits to board shorts and competition swimwear. Men will find surf trunks, board shorts and briefs from sizes 28 to XX large. For women, there are mix-and-match separates, bra-sized swimwear and long-torso, maternity and mastectomy suits, all in the coolest styles. This gift shop offers a great variety, so much that you really have to come see it for yourself. You’ll find books, stained glass, flags, jewelry, nautical items, T-shirts, hats, driftwood, Harbor Lights and lots of lighthouses. It’s between the post office and the school.

Captain’s Easy Gourmet

Captain’s Easy Gourmet sells wine, specialty beers and gourmet foods. Look for food and wine pairings with Chef “Bud” on Wednesday evenings, weekly wine tastings on Thursday evenings and live music most Friday evenings on the screened porch, where beer and wine are served. Build your own six pack from a selection of more than 100 specialty beers and choose from more than 250 wines. They offer a wide selection of items, from everyday necessities to gourmet treats. There’s a large selection of meats and produce, and the deli counter offers meats, cheeses and hot food specials to take away. They now have a complete organic section as well. Beach items and souvenirs are also available here.

This store is the stylish girl’s dream. Day Dreams combines the best of city chic with the best of island style. You’ll find swimwear for everyone, sundresses, flip-flops and sunglasses as well as designer dresses and separates, jewelry, nice accessories and a great selection of clothes. We love the selection of hats and purses. The sale rack alone is worth devoting some serious time to.

Diamond Shoals Seafood Market

Diamond Shoals Restaurant has an awesome seafood market where you can pick up locally caught seafood to cook at home yourself or a purchase a fully cooked take-out dinner. Select from shrimp, clams, scallops, inshore and offshore fish, crabs and Diamond Shoals’ well-known homemade crab cakes. If you’re not in the mood to cook, let the market staff cook the seafood for you. They can fry, grill or broil any of the seafood for take-out, and after 5 p.m. they also offer sides to go — hushpuppies, French fries, cole slaw, baked potatoes or mashed potatoes. You’ll find the market in the same building as the restaurant. It’s open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day in the summer. Call for off-season hours.

This is really two stores in one. Downstairs it’s a tackle shop with bait, tackle, rods and reels, gas, gear, waders, boots, snacks, rod and reel repair, custom-rod building, tide charts and everything else for fishermen. Upstairs it’s a gift shop and gallery with artwork, prints, ceramics, candles, local interest books, novelties, lighthouse figurines, T-shirts and many other gifts and souvenirs. They also have a handy digital photo machine where you can print your photos off your digital camera.

Dirty Dick’s Retail

Dirty Dick’s Crab House (the restaurant located at Hatteras Landing) does a brisk business with its T-shirts, boxers, shorts and other merchandise featuring a cast of loony characters and some rather racy slogans. You can find it all here in the retail shop, along with a lot of other gift items.

Dockside Hatteras specializes in beach home decor. They sell furniture, including sofas, chairs, tables, bar stools, beds and chests, plus home necessities like mattresses, colorful shower curtains, bath mats, pots and pans, dishes, glasses, dish towels and more. Home accents are available too, such as end tables, mirrors, framed prints, lamps, rugs and throw pillows. They also sell outdoor furniture, and this is a great place to find gifts. Dockside Hatteras delivers for free.

Everything in this store costs just $1. You’ll find a variety of stuff, such as toys, decorations, food, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, toiletries, home décor and a whole lot more. This is a great place to take children because they can always find an inexpensive item to take home.

Endless Summer provides an endless array of services. The deli serves light breakfast fare (including waffles) along with smoothies, sandwiches and subs and fresh-baked bread for lunch. Cookies and bread are baked fresh daily, and they have shaved ice cones. Endless Summer is also a convenience store selling drinks, beer, ice, snacks and specialty foods and grocery items. Since it’s right next to the ferry docks, this is a great place to grab a meal or picnic supplies before you hop on the ferry to Ocracoke. In its dry goods market, the store sells apparel, gifts, local artwork, jewelry and is the exclusive purveyor of Hatteras Landing Marina logo merchandise.

Family Jewels is Hatteras Island’s only store dedicated exclusively to jewelry. Most of the jewelry here is handmade by owner/jeweler Wendy Sisler. Her creations are crafted of Murano glass beads, pearls, gemstones, crystals and silver. A few other select artists are represented here too.

Farmer’s Daughter is so chock-full of goods you probably won’t be able to see everything in one visit, nor can we describe it all here. But if you’re a shopper, you’ll love wandering through this store, discovering crafts, home and garden accents, nautical and coastal décor, hand-painted glassware, chimes, candles, jewelry, flags, shell art, Outer Banks Christmas decorations, toys, custom T-shirts and sweatshirts, and jackets. They also have a great selection of swimwear for the entire family, sun hats, caps, summer footwear, jewelry and beach supplies.

Fisherman’s Daughter

Be prepared for some serious shopping. Fisherman’s Daughter offers a great assortment of goods, from the Brighton collection and Pandora jewelry to the Vera Bradley line. The upstairs gallery offers Yankee Candles, unique Christmas ornaments and decorations, furniture, books and collectibles, including Willow Tree angels.

Food Lion

Food Lion is a major chain grocery store, the largest on the island. They offer fresh produce, a bakery, hot foods and all the grocery items you’ll need.

Frank and Fran’s Fisherman’s Friend

This tackle shop calls itself the “Fisherman’s Friend” because it offers everything an angler could need, including fine cigars for those times when the bite is slow. Frank and Fran’s sells bait and tackle, fishing supplies and gear, ice, beverages and much more. Stop by for fishing advice, information on Cape Hatteras Anglers Club tournaments and a complimentary cup of coffee. This is an official weigh station.
