Gaskins Gallery

It’s worth the trip onto the back roads of Avon to find this gallery. Turn west on Harbor Road (at the stoplight) then take a right on North End Road. The gallery is in a cedar-shake house a little ways down on the left. In two levels of galleries, you’ll find paintings and pottery by local artists, prints, photography, Annalee dolls, jewelry and other works of art. Gaskins Gallery specializes in framing.

Happy Waters Pools and Spas sells pool and spa supplies and does maintenance and repair on pools and spas, but now they do so much more. The store has branched out into retail with a great variety of fun water-related items, beach gear and sporting goods. You’ll find pool toys, water games, floats and rafts, life jackets, snorkeling gear, chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen, coolers, sporting goods (basketballs, footballs, Frisbees), billiards supplies and even swimsuits for men, women and children at prices ranging from $9.99 to $19.99.

Harbor House Seafood Market

The Harrison family has been in the commercial fishing business in Hatteras for 20 years. In order to ensure a future in fishing for their children, the Harrisons started a retail market next to their home in Hatteras Village. Robert Harrison fishes offshore and is one of the last stakeholders in snapper/grouper fishery, and his son, Graham, fishes in the sound. Here you can buy fresh clams, shrimp, scallops crab, snowy grouper, black sea bass, triggerfish, snapper, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo, sheepshead, bluefish, flounder and more, depending on the season, of course. It’s open seven days a week in summer and is across from Hatteras Harbor Marina.

In addition to tackle, Hatteras Harbor Marina’s store has a great line of fine gifts and clothing. You’ll find clothes for men, women and children and a wide range of gifts and accessories, from art to dishware to 14K gold jewelry. Many of the items have a nautical or coastal theme but there’s much more than that.

Want a vacation memory that will last forever? Come to Hatteras Ink for a tattoo. This studio specializes in custom work and original designs, although there are flash books you can look through for ideas. It’s certified by the N.C Board of Health. The studio also offers T-shirts, original surf art, paintings and prints. Appointments are preferred but are not always necessary. Hatteras Ink is open year round but usually closes for a few weeks in winter.

Hatteras Island Boardsports is a one-stop shop for surf gear and apparel for men, women and kids. Some brand names you’ll find here include Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Roxy and Rusty, along with surfboards by Dewey Weber, Rusty and HIB. They rent kayaks, surfboards, body boards, skim boards and wetsuits and offer surfing lessons. 

Hatteras Island Toy Store

Hatteras Island Toy Store is the only dedicated toy store on the island, and it’s the place to find a toy to suit any age group. You’ll find baby toys, beach toys, puzzles, pirate toys, and all the popular brand toys kids know and love, including Melissa & Doug puzzles. One entire room is devoted as a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom, and the store sells an enormous selection of everything Thomas. Thursday is Thomas Play Day when kids can come and paint their own wooden train. Kids love it! They also sell hermit crabs and all their accessories and hold really fun hermit crab races on Fridays. It’s next to Studio 12 Paint Our Pottery in Avon.

Hatteras Jack

Hatteras Jack is well-known for its expertise in building custom rods and reels. They also offer expert repairs of fishing equipment, stock all the bait and tackle you could need for a Hatteras Island fishing trip and refer fishing charters. They now offer Century fishing rods. The thrift shop accepts and sells clothes, books, magazines, home accessories and appliances, furniture, baby items, toys and much more.

This thrift shop raises funds for Hotline, a crisis shelter and domestic violence prevention service for women and children and a 24-hour crisis line. You can donate used items or buy goods at reasonable prices. This location sells clothing and knick knacks; no appliances or large items here. Look for it in a gray building by the Rodanthe Fire Station. Hours are Monday 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Island Choppers

Island Choppers caters to the motorcycling crowd with T-shirts, parts and accessories for American and metric motorcycles, tune-up parts, chrome, leather chaps and vests. They also sell scooters and scooter parts. This is also an official inspection facility.
