Fox Watersports in Buxton has opened a second location in Hatteras Village at Stowe on 12. This location specializes in kiteboarding, surfing, standup paddleboards (SUP), kayaks and bodyboards. You can buy all this gear and the hard goods you need or rent surfboards, SUPs, kayaks and bodyboards. They also offer lessons in surfing and SUP. They’re considering bike rentals, too, so call and ask about those. Fox also sells surf-inspired clothing and accessories.

This tackle shop calls itself the “Fisherman’s Friend” because it offers everything an angler could need, including fine cigars for those times when the bite is slow. Frank and Fran’s sells bait and tackle, fishing supplies and gear, ice, beverages and much more. Stop by for fishing advice, information on Cape Hatteras Anglers Club tournaments and a complimentary cup of coffee. This is an official weigh station.

The Frisco Art Center offers three distinct galleries under one roof — The Sea Glass Gallery, The Art Cottage and An Old-Fashioned Christmas Shop. Together, the galleries represent more than 75 local, North Carolina and coastal artists, and everything sold here is handcrafted by an artist. A few of the mediums you’ll find include pottery, jewelry, glass sculptures and photography, and there’s much more so plan to spend some time looking around here. The mission of the Frisco Art Center is to support the arts, sponsor students through scholarships and offer affordable prices to their customers.

It’s worth the trip onto the back roads of Avon to find this gallery. Turn west on Harbor Road (at the stoplight) then take a right on North End Road. The gallery is in a cedar-shake house a little ways down on the left. In two levels of galleries, you’ll find paintings and pottery by local artists, prints, photography, jewelry and other works of art. Gaskins Gallery specializes in framing.

The Harrison family has been in the commercial fishing business in Hatteras for more than 20 years. In order to ensure a future in fishing for their children, the Harrisons started a retail market next to their home in Hatteras Village. Here you can buy fresh clams, shrimp, softshell crabs, scallops, crab, triggerfish, yellow-fin tuna, cobia, mahi mahi, wahoo, sheepshead, bluefish, flounder, red drum, pompano and more, depending on the season, of course. They now also serve ready-made items for take out, including crab cakes, shrimp and crab meat enchiladas, seafood chimichangas, bacon-wrapped scallops and other grill-ready items, salads, seasonings and condiments. It’s open seven days a week in summer and is across from Hatteras Harbor Marina. During the summer months their sandwich stand sells wraps and fish tacos.

They rent kayaks, surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards and wetsuits and offer surfing lessons.

This soundfront recreation center offers rentals of kayaks, sailboats and windsurfing equipment plus lessons in windsurfing and kiteboarding. An on-site launching facility makes it easy to slip into the water. They sell kiteboarding and windsurfing equipment as well as active-inspired clothing and all the gear you need for your favorite watersports.

This classic surf shop in an old cottage has been a fixture on the island surf scene for more than 40 years. The shop sells new and used boards and surf-related gear and rents surf, body, skim and standup paddleboards plus beach gear. Surf lessons are available for adults as well as kids. They sell all the watersports equipment, accessories and wetsuits you could need, along with surf-inspired clothing and accessories.

Hatteras Island Toy Store is the only dedicated toy store on the island, and it’s the place to find a toy to suit any age group. You’ll find baby toys, beach toys, puzzles, pirate toys and all the popular brand toys kids know and love, including Chuggington and Melissa & Doug. One entire room is devoted as a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom, and the store sells an enormous selection of everything Thomas. Thursday is Thomas Play Day when kids can come and paint their own wooden train. Kids love it! They also sell hermit crabs and all their accessories and hold really fun hermit crab races on Fridays. It’s next to Studio 12 Paint Our Pottery in Avon.

Hatteras Jack is known for building custom rods and reels. They also offer repairs of fishing equipment, stock all the bait and tackle you could need for a Hatteras Island fishing trip and refer fishing charters. They now offer Century fishing rods. Ice and drinks are available, and this is a weigh station.

Next to the ferry docks, Hatteras Landing Marina’s Ship Store is a great place to pop into while you wait for a ferry. You can get snacks and hot dogs and drinks, plus you’ll find apparel, sunglasses, hats, T-shirts and souvenirs. This is also the place to book an offshore or inshore charter on one of the marina’s six charter boats.

Check out the new surfer designs and saltwater fish collections. The popular beach windblocks are still available for sale or rent and are still only $7 a day or $35 a week.

This thrift shop raises funds for Hotline, a crisis shelter and domestic violence prevention service for women and children and a 24-hour crisis line. You can donate used items or buy goods at reasonable prices. This location sells clothing and knick knacks; no appliances or large items here. Look for it in a gray building by the Rodanthe Fire Station. Hours are Monday 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dennis, a former NASA Aerospace Photojournalist, is a full-service photographer offering commercial photography, workshops, studio portraits, outdoor portraits (think family beach pictures), wedding photography and island art. Stop in the storefront to see or purchase Dennis’s art prints or inquire about his photography services. dK is also represented at Roads End Gallery in Hatteras, Down Creek Gallery in Ocracoke and Island Perks in Buxton.
