Lee Robinson’s General Store, on the south end of Hatteras Village, has been serving the village since 1948. It’s a convenient place to stop for groceries, gourmet items, snacks, drinks, beer and fine wine and ice. It’s also a fun place to shop for T-shirts and beachwear, books, maps, souvenirs and beach supplies. There’s a neat gift gallery upstairs. New this year is the Sticky Bottom Produce Co. fruit and veggie stand across the street from the General Store. It’s open June through October, daily from 10 a.m. to sunset.

This gift shop, in the same building as the Breeze Thru, sells ornaments, home accents, local artwork, seashells, lighthouses, stained glass, wind chimes and other items that add a sparkle to any home’s decor. T-shirts and jewelry are available as well. There’s also a theme of angels, mermaids and fairies at this shop.

Natural Art has been a fixture on the island surfing scene since 1977, and it’s all about serious surfing. They shape custom boards and create custom artwork so you can design your own. They sell new and used surfboards and skim boards and rent surfboards, body boards and wetsuits. They also repair surfboards. All the surfing support gear is here too: clothing, footwear, wetsuits, rash guards, accessories, sunscreen, art, you name it.

The Nedo is like an old-fashioned variety store inside a modern building. Like the sign says, you’ll find a little bit of everything. The shelves are lined with hardware and do-it-yourself supplies, lawn and garden supplies, cleaning products, house wares and home decor, fishing supplies, toys, souvenirs, cards, linens, shoes and lots more. You’ll also find firewood, grills, coolers, magazines, books, sunglasses and T-shirts.

When you’ve got some spare time to browse around the shops of Rodanthe, stop in Ocean Gourmet and Gifts. There are lots of fun souvenirs here including lighthouse collectibles, figurines, jewelry, mugs, key chains and more. You’ll find some beach-inspired clothes and swimsuits. You can also indulge in a variety of sweets, including homemade fudge, at this store.

The Old Gray House is one of those stores that vacationers can’t wait to return to each year. The store is housed in an historic island home on Light Plant Road across from Conner’s Supermarket. Inside you’ll find tons of treasures and gifts, much of it handcrafted, including Christmas decorations, baskets, wreaths, cross-stitch, birdhouses, dolls, knickknacks and a lot of seashells. You’ll want to stay awhile and talk with the friendly owners.

The selection at Parrot Bay is too huge to possibly list everything here. This is a great store for browsing. You’ll find coastal home décor items, garden accessories, gifts and Outer Banks souvenirs. They also have jewelry, sunhats, caps, beach supplies and a whole lot of T-shirts and sweatshirts.
Pea Island Art Gallery

The southernmost building on the soundside in Salvo, this gallery is housed in an exquisite building that’s a replica of an 1874 life-saving station. The building itself attracts well-deserved attention, but wait until you see what’s inside. Owner Kim Robertson sells her mixed-media photography here, but she also represents more than 100 other local and regional artists, including her mother and sister and artists she met while on the art-show circuit. There’s a broad mix of media, from fiber, wood, glass, jewelry and garden art to all ranges of two-dimensional works. Part of the proceeds from the gallery sales benefits the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge and the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.

This small shop sells all sorts of pirate-themed gear, such as bandanas, hats, flags, toys, books and T-shirts. The T-shirt/sweatshirt designs change every year and are available only at this location. You’ll also find locally made art and jewelry and souvenirs. The shop is across from Hatteras Jack Tackle Shop in Rodanthe, and you can’t miss the signs.

The REAL Flagship Store features more than 7,000 square feet of high-ceiling, teak-floor retail space filled with all the best brands of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, beachwear, sunglasses, watches, footwear and accessories. You’ll find brands like Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, Patagonia, O’Neill, Quiksilver, Sanuk, Reef, Nike 6.0, Nixon, Electric, Oakley and more, and friendly staff will help you find your perfect purchases. It’s open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Also on site is MOJOs Sunset Café with waterfront seating and live entertainment.

The legendary Red Drum, serving Hatteras Island since 1954, offers all the bait, tackle, supplies, gear and advice you’ll need, plus rod building and repair. It’s in a strip center that also houses a grocery store, a gas station, an auto parts store and an auto repair shop. Stop by for a free tide table.

Now in a new location in the old Indiantown Gallery, this is the working studio of potters Wes Lassiter and Rhonda Bates. You can often catch the potters at the wheel, and you can see their functional and decorative pieces on display in the gallery. You must stop in to see their award-winning relief ceramic tiles and ornaments imprinted with sea life and wildlife. The Christmas tree ornaments are the perfect souvenirs of a Hatteras vacation. There’s a painting gallery here as well, representing Rhonda’s work. They’ve recently begun representing several regional artists as well.
Risky Business Seafood Market

Risky Business offers shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams, and they’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments as well. Risky Business also has a store on the waterfront in Hatteras Village.

Risky Business is the island’s only seafood market located on the water, so you can come and watch the boats unload their catch. You can’t get any fresher than that! Purchase shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams here. They’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments too. Risky Business also offers complete processing of your catch, from cleaning to vacuum packaging to freezing. They have another store in Avon.

This classic, surf-only shop has been a Rodanthe fixture for more than 20 years. Rodanthe Surf Shop is a hardcore surf shop with no fluff or over-commercialized merchandise. This is the place to get your own Hatteras Glass custom surfboard. They do surfboard repairs, rentals and lessons for adults and children. Rodanthe Surf Shop stocks the major brands of surf wear for men and women, and people love their original logo T-shirts for all ages. The shop is in a tiki-hut style building next to the Liberty Gas station in Rodanthe.
