It’s worth the trip onto the back roads of Avon to find this gallery. Turn west on Harbor Road (at the stoplight) then take a right on North End Road. The gallery is in a cedar-shake house a little ways down on the left. In two levels of galleries, you’ll find paintings and pottery by local artists, prints, photography, Annalee dolls, jewelry and other works of art. Gaskins Gallery specializes in framing.

Hatteras Island Toy Store is the only dedicated toy store on the island, and it’s the place to find a toy to suit any age group. You’ll find baby toys, beach toys, puzzles, pirate toys, and all the popular brand toys kids know and love, including Melissa & Doug puzzles. One entire room is devoted as a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom, and the store sells an enormous selection of everything Thomas. Thursday is Thomas Play Day when kids can come and paint their own wooden train. Kids love it! They also sell hermit crabs and all their accessories and hold really fun hermit crab races on Fridays.
