It’s worth the trip onto the back roads of Avon to find this gallery. Turn west on Harbor Road (at the stoplight) then take a right on North End Road. The gallery is in a cedar-shake house a little ways down on the left. In two levels of galleries, you’ll find paintings and pottery by local artists, prints, photography, Annalee dolls, jewelry and other works of art. Gaskins Gallery specializes in framing.

Askins Creek also has an automatic car wash with undercarriage wash and a manual car wash, and if you buy this service you get $1 off any purchase of $15 or more in the store. Avon Surf Shop sells Newton Surfboards, which are made by a local shaper Mark Newton in Buxton, plus boards by McTavish and Sharp Eye. They also have a great skate selection and do custom orders for skateboards. You’ll find wetsuits, rash guards, apparel for men, women and children, shoes and flip-flops, handmade jewelry and a large selection of sunglasses. Barefoot Station is an upscale convenience store offering what you’d expect: gas, an ATM, grocery items, drinks and snacks, beach stuff, T-shirts, hot foods for breakfast and lunch, and specialty beers and wines. What you don’t expect is all the extras they have. They offer hand-dipped ice cream and a Build-A-Bear workshop that costs only $16 per bear. They’ve got a pool table with $1 pool games and a really cool movie theater space where you can catch a movie and enjoy a beer or glass of wine. The intimate, 32-seat theater shows current DVD releases with free admission; call to check the schedule and times. The theater is available to rent for $25, so you can bring a group of friends or hold a birthday party here. It’s a great place for kid’s birthday party as the children can build their own teddy bear, watch a movie and enjoy ice cream.

Hatteras Island Toy Store is the only dedicated toy store on the island, and it’s the place to find a toy to suit any age group. You’ll find baby toys, beach toys, puzzles, pirate toys and all the popular brand toys kids know and love including Melissa & Doug puzzles. One entire room is devoted as a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom, and the store sells an enormous selection of everything Thomas. Thursday is Thomas Play Day when kids can come and paint their own wooden train. Kids love it! They also sell hermit crabs and all their accessories and hold really fun hermit crab races on Fridays.
