Girls in their teens all the way up to fashion-minded older women will be delighted with the choices here. There’s a mix that spans from great daywear and sportswear to the perfect outfit to wear for a night on the town. Pictures of Audrey Hepburn gaze their approval from the wall, and we’ve no doubt she’d approve of the pink and black decor theme.

Ocean Atlantic Rentals

Ocean Atlantic Rentals rents bikes for the whole family. They have large and small frame bikes for men and women plus kids’ bikes, pull-behind carts, child seats, tricycles and helmets for adults and children. They also rent kayaks, surf boards, boogie boards and beach gear. Delivery and pickup are offered to all Hatteras Island villages, for free on orders more than $99 and for a small charge for orders less than that amount.

You can walk in any time to make some art or sign up for one of their many classes. Shop their gallery filled with art that includes wheel-thrown pottery, hand-crafted tiles, paintings and jewelry by Studio 12 owners Carolyn and Gary Schena. Studio 12 is open Monday through Saturday in the off-season and seven days a week in the summer.

It’s worth the trip onto the back roads of Avon to find this gallery. Turn west on Harbor Road (at the stoplight) then take a right on North End Road. The gallery is in a cedar-shake house a little ways down on the left. In two levels of galleries, you’ll find paintings and pottery by local artists, prints, photography, jewelry and other works of art. Gaskins Gallery specializes in framing.

Hatteras Island Boardsports is a one-stop shop for surf gear and apparel for men, women and kids. Some brand names you’ll find here include Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Roxy and Rusty, along with surfboards by Dewey Weber, Rusty and Imagine. They rent kayaks, surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards and wetsuits and offer surfing lessons.

Hatteras Island Toy Store is the only dedicated toy store on the island, and it’s the place to find a toy to suit any age group. You’ll find baby toys, beach toys, puzzles, pirate toys and all the popular brand toys kids know and love, including Chuggington and Melissa & Doug. One entire room is devoted as a Thomas the Tank Engine playroom, and the store sells an enormous selection of everything Thomas. Thursday is Thomas Play Day when kids can come and paint their own wooden train. Kids love it! They also sell hermit crabs and all their accessories and hold really fun hermit crab races on Fridays. Antoinette Gaskins Mattingly is a fourth-generation Hatteras Island artist. As the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of artists, she has enjoyed working in various mediums since childhood. They have all led to the work she creates in clay today. Antoinette works in the studio here, crafting decorative and functional pottery that is sold in galleries across the country.
