Natural Art has been a fixture on the island surfing scene since 1977, and it’s all about serious surfing. They shape custom boards and create custom artwork so you can design your own. They sell new and used surfboards and skimboards and rent surfboards, bodyboards and wetsuits. They also repair surfboards. All the surfing support gear is here too: clothing, footwear, wetsuits, rash guards, accessories, sunscreen, art, you name it.

Ocean Notions is a fun place. They offer gifts and souvenirs, jewelry, sundresses, tank tops, swimsuits, boardshorts, T-shirts, sandals and other things you need for the beach.

Old Gray House

The Old Gray House is one of those stores that vacationers can’t wait to return to each year. The store is housed in an historic island home on Light Plant Road across from Conner’s Supermarket. Inside you’ll find tons of treasures and gifts, much of it handcrafted, including Christmas decorations, baskets, wreaths, cross-stitch, birdhouses, dolls, knickknacks and a lot of seashells. You’ll want to stay awhile and talk with the friendly owners.

Red Drum Pottery

Now in a new location in the old Indiantown Gallery, this is the working studio of potters Wes Lassiter and Rhonda Bates. You can often catch the potters at the wheel, and you can see their functional and decorative pieces on display in the gallery. You must stop in to see their award-winning relief ceramic tiles and ornaments imprinted with sea life, floral patterns and wildlife. The Christmas tree ornaments are the perfect souvenirs of a Hatteras vacation. There’s a painting gallery here as well, representing Rhonda’s work. They’ve recently begun representing several regional artists as well.

Red Drum Tackle Shop

The legendary Red Drum, serving Hatteras Island since 1954, offers all the bait, tackle, supplies, gear and advice you’ll need, plus rod building and repair. It’s in a strip center that also houses a grocery store, a gas station, an auto parts store and an auto repair shop. Stop by for a free tide table.

Sunsational Designs Gallery, Coffee and Beads

This gallery, owned by a native Hatteras Island family for more than 20 years, is not an ordinary art gallery. Sure, they offer paintings and other artwork by their family of artists, including the jewelry of Sarah Allender, but they also offer rock art, buoy art and fun gifts. They also sell thousands of beads, so this is a great place to make your own custom jewelry. Sunsational now offers gourmet coffee and espresso-based drinks and specialty teas.

Everybody can find a swimsuit at this store. With four stores on Hatteras Island and more on the northern Outer Banks, Surfside Casuals is one of the area’s most well-known names in swimwear, beach apparel and sportswear. The women’s swimsuit section offers hundreds of suits, including separates, for every shape and age.

The Elegant Attic

The Elegant Attic is an antiques shop housed in an old Buxton cottage that the owner saved from demolition. The shop’s main feature is a spectacular selection of antique stained-glass windows and doors imported from England. You’ll find other antiques as well, including English and domestic furniture. The prices are very reasonable. The shop, which is south of the Buxton post office, is huge, and you could easily spend a couple of hours browsing around in here. The owner also has vignettes set up in her house and welcomes folks into her home to see how she uses the windows as décor.

The Space Between

The Space Between is a full-service espresso bar serving all your favorite coffee drinks, Chai, tea and smoothies. There’s seating on the porch, and WiFi is available. This is also a fun boutique, with a wide variety of clothing, shoes, handmade hats, jewelry, purses and many more good things. It’s open year round.

For the latest and greatest in movies, visit Village Video, renting DVD and BluRay movies at three locations on Hatteras Island. They offer a great selection of new releases plus the classics that you want to watch again and again. Vacationers are welcome, and no membership is required. They also rent PlayStation II games.
