Inside a restored 1950s Hatteras cottage, Blue Pelican Gallery offers an eclectic mix of artwork, most of it local. Owner/artist Jennifer Johnson is a native Hatteras Islander, and her photography reflects her love of the area. She also creates jewelry, which she sells here as well. Blue Pelican represents other local artists too, and you’ll find surf art, prints, tiles, pottery, ornaments, hard-carved birds, music and much more. Look for this gallery beside Burrus Red & White.

In a stunningly beautiful robin’s-egg blue building N.C. 12 just before the Ferry Docks, you’ll find Seaworthy Gallery. Painter and owner Carole Nunnally showcases fine, hand-crafted local and regional art in a variety of mediums, including painting, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, wood carvings and much more. Rather than the expected grouping by artistic mediums, she divides the gallery into themes – shorebirds, marine life, boats and lighthouses, whimsical, jewelry-pottery, and people-places-things. It adds up to a delightful shopping experience. Hand-painted porcelain and sand dollar ornaments are some of the favorite items here.

Endless Summer provides an endless array of services. The deli serves light breakfast fare (including waffles) along with smoothies, sandwiches and subs and fresh-baked bread for lunch. Family Jewels is Hatteras Island’s only store dedicated exclusively to jewelry. Most of the jewelry here is handmade by owner/jeweler Wendy Sisler. Her creations are crafted of Murano glass beads, pearls, gemstones, crystals and silver. A few other select artists are represented here too.

The Harrison family has been in the commercial fishing business in Hatteras for 20 years. In order to ensure a future in fishing for their children, the Harrisons started a retail market next to their home in Hatteras Village. Robert Harrison fishes offshore and is one of the last stakeholders in snapper/grouper fishery, and his son, Graham, fishes in the sound. Here you can buy fresh clams, shrimp, scallops crab, snowy grouper, black sea bass, triggerfish, snapper, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo, sheepshead, bluefish, flounder and more, depending on the season, of course. It’s open seven days a week in summer and is across from Hatteras Harbor Marina.

Whimsical billfish — that’s about the best way to describe Karen Rhodes’ unique artwork, which celebrates the offshore fishing culture of Hatteras Village. Her designs are highly original and fun. Karen takes her signature billfish images and puts them on a variety of products such as tees, prints, tiles, cutting boards, Tervis tumblers, belts, flip-flops, baby rompers, pajamas, handbags, doggie items, note cards, you name it. There are other things here too, like Odor Eliminator Candles, bath salts and more. This really fun store is in the little stand-alone building at Stowe on 12.

Lee Robinson’s General Store, on the south end of Hatteras Village, has been serving the village since 1948. It’s a convenient place to stop for groceries, gourmet items, snacks, drinks, beer and fine wine and ice. It’s also a fun place to shop for T-shirts and beachwear, books, maps, souvenirs and beach supplies. There’s a neat gift gallery upstairs.

The Nedo is like an old-fashioned variety store inside a modern building. Like the sign says, you’ll find a little bit of everything. Outer Banks Diving (see Recreation for information about scuba diving charters) sells snorkeling gear, scuba gear, wetsuits, accessories, T-shirts and apparel of interest to divers. But even if you don’t dive you should stop by this store to see their variety of unique souvenirs. Outer Banks Diving sells giant prehistoric shark’s teeth plus shipwreck and nautical items, some for souvenir hunters, others for serious collectors.

The selection at Parrot Bay is too huge to possibly list everything here. This is a great store for browsing. You’ll find coastal home décor items, garden accessories, gifts and Outer Banks souvenirs. Plus, they carry a terrifc selection of swimwear and custom T-shirts for men, women, juniors, and kids. They also have jewelry, resort beach brand shoes and sandals, sunhats, caps and beach supplies.
Risky Business Seafood Market

Risky Business is the island’s only seafood market located on the water, so you can come and watch the boats unload their catch. You can’t get any fresher than that! Purchase shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams here. They’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments too. Risky Business also offers complete processing of your catch, from cleaning to vacuum packaging to freezing. They have another store in Avon.
