Inside a restored 1950s Hatteras cottage, Blue Pelican Gallery offers an eclectic mix of artwork, most of it local. Owner/artist Jennifer Johnson is a native Hatteras Islander, and her photography reflects her love of the area. She also creates jewelry, which she sells here as well. Blue Pelican represents other local artists too, and you’ll find surf art, prints, tiles, pottery, ornaments, hand-carved birds, music and much more. Look for this gallery beside Burrus Red & White.

Outer Banks Diving (see Recreation for information about scuba diving charters) sells snorkeling gear, scuba gear, wetsuits, accessories, T-shirts and apparel of interest to divers. But even if you don’t dive you should stop by this store to see their variety of unique souvenirs. Outer Banks Diving sells giant prehistoric shark’s teeth, Tervis Tumblers and nautical items, some for souvenir hunters, others for serious collectors.

In a stunningly beautiful robin’s-egg blue building on N.C. 12 just before the ferry docks, you’ll find Seaworthy Gallery. Painter and owner Carole Nunnally showcases fine, hand-crafted local and regional art in a variety of mediums, including painting, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, wood carvings and much more. Rather than the expected grouping by artistic mediums, she divides the gallery into themes – shorebirds, marine life, boats and lighthouses, whimsical, jewelry-pottery and people-places-things. It adds up to a delightful shopping experience. The gallery has the largest selection of N.C.-made pottery on Hatteras Island, and the hand-painted porcelain and sand dollar ornaments are some of the favorite items here.

When you’re out and about in Hatteras Village, stop by this cool shop, located in a historic building smack dab in the middle of Hatteras Village. In business for 29 years on the Outer Banks, Birthday Suits is a favorite for swimwear — in fact, it’s been voted Best on the Beach for swimsuits for nine years in local polls. Women’s swimsuits are the specialty here — the latest styles for all ages, mix-and-match separates, bra-sized swimwear and long-torso, maternity and mastectomy suits — but they also sell suits for kids’ and men. For kids, there’s everything from swim diapers and toddler suits to board shorts and competition swimwear in sizes infant to preteen. Family Jewels is Hatteras Island’s only store dedicated exclusively to jewelry. Most of the jewelry here is handmade by owner/jeweler Wendy Sisler. Her creations are crafted of Murano glass beads handmade on site, pearls, gemstones, crystals and silver. A few other select artists are represented here too.

Farmer’s Daughter is so chock-full of goods you probably won’t be able to see everything in one visit, nor can we describe it all here. Fox Watersports in Buxton has opened a second location in Hatteras Village at Stowe on 12. This location specializes in kiteboarding, surfing, standup paddleboards (SUP), kayaks and bodyboards. You can buy all this gear and the hard goods you need or rent surfboards, SUPs, kayaks and bodyboards. They also offer lessons in surfing and SUP. They’re considering bike rentals, too, so call and ask about those. Fox also sells surf-inspired clothing and accessories.

The Harrison family has been in the commercial fishing business in Hatteras for more than 20 years. In order to ensure a future in fishing for their children, the Harrisons started a retail market next to their home in Hatteras Village. Here you can buy fresh clams, shrimp, softshell crabs, scallops, crab, triggerfish, yellow-fin tuna, cobia, mahi mahi, wahoo, sheepshead, bluefish, flounder, red drum, pompano and more, depending on the season, of course. They now also serve ready-made items for take out, including crab cakes, shrimp and crab meat enchiladas, seafood chimichangas, bacon-wrapped scallops and other grill-ready items, salads, seasonings and condiments. It’s open seven days a week in summer and is across from Hatteras Harbor Marina. During the summer months their sandwich stand sells wraps and fish tacos.

Next to the ferry docks, Hatteras Landing Marina’s Ship Store is a great place to pop into while you wait for a ferry. You can get snacks and hot dogs and drinks, plus you’ll find apparel, sunglasses, hats, T-shirts and souvenirs. This is also the place to book an offshore or inshore charter on one of the marina’s six charter boats.

Photographer Dennis Keim — dK as he’s known in the photography world — has a Hatteras Island outlet for his photography at Hwy 12 PhotoArts in Stowe on 12. Dennis, a former NASA Aerospace Photojournalist, is a full-service photographer offering commercial photography, workshops, studio portraits, outdoor portraits (think family beach pictures), wedding photography and island art. Stop in the storefront to see or purchase Dennis’s art prints or inquire about his photography services. dK is also represented at Roads End Gallery in Hatteras, Down Creek Gallery in Ocracoke and Island Perks in Buxton.

Lee Robinson’s General Store

Lee Robinson’s General Store, on the south end of Hatteras Village, has been serving the village since 1948. It’s a convenient place to stop for groceries, gourmet items, snacks, drinks, beer and fine wine and ice. It’s also a fun place to shop for T-shirts and beachwear, books, maps, souvenirs and beach supplies. There’s a neat gift gallery upstairs. The store is open daily 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in season. Their Sticky Bottom Produce Co. fruit and veggie stand across the street from the General Store is open starting at 9 a.m. It’s open June through October.

The Nedo is like an old-fashioned variety store inside a modern building. Like the sign says, you’ll find a little bit of everything. The shelves are lined with hardware and do-it-yourself supplies, lawn and garden supplies, cleaning products, house wares and home decor, fishing supplies, toys, souvenirs, cards, linens, shoes and lots more. You’ll also find firewood, grills, coolers, magazines, books, sunglasses and T-shirts.

The selection at Parrot Bay is too huge to possibly list everything here. This is a great store for browsing. You’ll find coastal home décor items, garden accessories, gifts and Outer Banks souvenirs. They also have jewelry, sunhats, caps, beach supplies and a whole lot of T-shirts and sweatshirts.
Risky Business Seafood Market

Risky Business is the island’s only seafood market located on the water, so you can come and watch the boats unload their catch. Purchase shrimp, fish, scallops, crabs and clams here. They’ll steam up spiced shrimp or crabs for you to take out if you don’t want to cook them yourself. They sell great homemade crab cakes and all the favorite seafood condiments too. Risky Business also offers complete processing of your catch, from cleaning to vacuum packaging to freezing. They have another store in Avon.
