Happy Waters Pools and Spas sells pool and spa supplies and does maintenance and repair on pools and spas, but now they do so much more. The store has branched out into retail with a great variety of fun water-related items, beach gear and sporting goods. You’ll find pool toys, water games, floats and rafts, life jackets, snorkeling gear, chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen, coolers, sporting goods (basketballs, footballs, Frisbees), billiards supplies and even swimsuits for men, women and children at prices ranging from $9.99 to $19.99.

Hatteras Jack

Hatteras Jack is well-known for its expertise in building custom rods and reels. They also offer expert repairs of fishing equipment, stock all the bait and tackle you could need for a Hatteras Island fishing trip and refer fishing charters. They now offer Century fishing rods. Ice and drinks are available, and this is a weigh station.

This thrift shop raises funds for Hotline, a crisis shelter and domestic violence prevention service for women and children and a 24-hour crisis line. You can donate used items or buy goods at reasonable prices. This location sells clothing and knick knacks; no appliances or large items here. Look for it in a gray building by the Rodanthe Fire Station. Hours are Monday 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Island Tattoo is a full-service tattoo and body piercing studio, licensed and inspected by the North Carolina Department of Health and members of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists. The four tattoo artists on staff have 30 years of combined experience and are versed in all styles of tattooing. You can choose from 25,000 designs, but custom and freehand work is done here too. The whole gamut of body piercing is part of the deal here.

Pea Island Art Gallery

The southernmost building on the soundside in Salvo, this gallery is housed in an exquisite building that’s a replica of an 1874 life-saving station. The building itself attracts well-deserved attention, but wait until you see what’s inside. Owner Kim Robertson sells her mixed-media photography here, but she also represents nearly 100 other local and regional artists, including her mother and sister and artists she met while on the art-show circuit. There’s a broad mix of media, from fiber, wood, glass and jewelry to all ranges of two-dimensional works. Part of the proceeds from the gallery sales benefits the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge and the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station.

This small shop sells all sorts of pirate-themed gear, such as bandanas, hats, flags, toys, books and T-shirts. The T-shirt/sweatshirt designs change every year and are available only at this location. You’ll also find locally made art and jewelry and souvenirs. The shop is across from Hatteras Jack Tackle Shop in Rodanthe, and you can’t miss the signs.

REAL Watersports’ new retail shop offers 7,000 square feet of gear, apparel and accessories for the sporting crowd. Part of the store is a fully stocked rental and demo shop where you can rent equipment for standup paddleboarding, kiteboarding and surfing. The retail shop sells hard goods and soft goods. They also stock all major brands of surf-industry clothing and swimwear (including Rusty, Roxy, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Volcom, Hurley and Patagonia) plus sunglasses, watches, books and much more.

This classic, surf-only shop has been a Rodanthe fixture for more than 15 years. Rodanthe Surf Shop is a hardcore surf shop with no fluff or over-commercialized merchandise. This is the place to get your own Hatteras Glass Surfboard, which are shaped on site by custom order. There’s also clothing for men, women and children, plus sunglasses and other surf-related needs. It’s in the little house next to Island Convenience.

Sea Chest’s name is right on target. When you’re looking for something to do beyond the beach, get creative at this pottery-painting studio. You select an item, paint it to your heart’s content, and they’ll fire and glaze it for you to pick up later in the week. They also offer all the supplies you’ll need to design and craft your own mosaics. It’s open Monday through Saturday or by appointment for parties. Studio 12 also crafts custom hand-painted tiles and tile murals.
