Sea Chest’s name is right on target. This store is a veritable treasure chest offering an incredible assortment of wonders: chimes, kites, stained glass, figurines, books, calendars, fine jewelry, carvings, nautical souvenirs, collectibles and so much more we couldn’t possibly name it all here. The back of the store is dedicated to antiques, with lots of china, crystal and collectibles.

When nothing but fresh will do, head to this seafood and produce market. You’ll find fresh local seafood, including the ready-to-cook jumbo lump crab cakes that St. Waves is known for. They’ll steam shrimp for you to take home, and they offer steamer buckets ready for you to cook at home with ease. With several stores on Hatteras Island and more on the northern Outer Banks, Surfside Casuals is one of the area’s most well-known names in beach apparel and sportswear. Surfside Casuals offers some of the hottest brand names in surf- and beach-inspired clothing for women and boardshorts for men. The women’s swimsuit section offers hundreds of suits, including separates, for every shape and age.

The Blue Whale

The Blue Whale has been in business on Hatteras Island for 41 years. They sell just about all the convenience items you’ll need plus other fun stuff, including bait and tackle, groceries, hot sauces, gourmet coffee beans, imported and domestic beer, wine, beach supplies, ice, gas and diesel fuel, books and magazines. The Blue Whale also has a propane exchange, offers notary service and has an ATM.

The Fishin’ Hole

In business since the 1970s, The Fishin’ Hole is a full-service tackle shop with live bait and tackle plus brand-name rods and reels. It is an official weigh station, and the staff repairs rods and reels. They also sell groceries, beer and wine, snacks and drinks, beach supplies, T-shirts, waders, hip boots and clothing.

The Glass Bead/Beach Mugs

The Glass Bead bead shop has thousands of beads and all the jewelry-making supplies you’ll need to create your own jewelry. They also sell jewelry and photography by local artists. Beach Mugs serves coffee and all sorts of espresso-based drinks, tea, delicious baked goods and ice cream. Internet access is available on your computer or theirs.

Waves Market is a small grocery and deli. The market sells beer and wine, fresh produce, chips and snacks, ice cream (just about every flavor of Ben & Jerry’s), popsicles and lots more, and it’s the perfect place to pick up a picnic for the beach. The deli features take-out-only hot and cold sandwiches with Boars Head meats and cheeses, fresh-made tuna salad, chicken salad and pimiento cheese, vegetarian options, take-and-bake pizzas (perfect for cooking at home), house-smoked barbecue and hand-cut Belgian fries (thick cut, soaked overnight and fried twice, served with a special dipping sauce!). Waves market is open late (until midnight in summer) so this is the place to pick up the late-night beer and food.
